Poetry Friday/Poetry Notebooks/Equation Poems
There must be many odes written about paper and pens, right? Writing in notebooks has been a lifetime practice for me, partly because, well, I’m of an age that you used them regularly in school, but mostly because I love them. Notebooks + Pens = Personal Journeys
While I enjoy a good notebook, composition or otherwise, I’m really fond of paper scraps. I’m often quickly grabbing a paper bit and a pen to catch a thought before it pops like an iridescent bubble and I wonder where the wholeness of it went… I will often tape scraps in my notebook or rewrite later. Also, in today’s random fact, it warms my heart to know that Emily Dickinson wrote on old envelopes.
Here’s my equation poem on a found scrap:

Equation Poems: I discovered equation poems as a librarian reading Laura Purdie Salas’s fabulous picture book, Snowman – Cold = Puddle: Spring Equations. The students and I loved it from the start and we went on to write many poems. Laura’s books are a big hit in the classroom, kid-friendly, creative and inspire student writing – check out Laura’s books @Laura Purdie Salas.
Happy Poetry Friday! Jan @Bookseedstudio is inspiring us with “Chill” wishes, mountainous views and this week’s Poetry Round up!
Next week, I’ll be hosting the round up, for the first time, and am excited to share poems and poetic inspiration with this creative community!
